General, Municipal, Boilermakers' and Allied Trade Union GMB
The General, Municipal, Boilermakers' and Allied Trade Union, or GMB union as it is known today, has over 600,000 members in industries covering; clothing, textiles, commercial services, construction, furniture, energy and utilities, engineering, food, leisure, processing and public services. These are divided into three areas; GMB Commercial Services, GMB Manufacturing, and GMB Public Services.
The name stems from a merger in the 1920's, and since then it has gradually incorporated many other smaller unions to become the large organisation it is today.
